Our environmental handprint

Measuring our environmental handprint makes the positive environmental impacts of our expert work in customer projects visible. We measure our handprint comprehensively in large projects using a method we have developed ourselves.

We measure our environmental handprint

The role of the built environment in achieving national and international environmental goals is critical. We want to take care of the environmental goals of our customer projects as if they were our own.

The environmental handprint refers to the solutions or choices made in engineering and design, construction management, or expert work that reduce the environmental harm of the project or increase positive environmental impacts. The development of the handprint assessment has applied scientific research (e.g., VTT) and SKOL's study on the handprint impacts of designers – there was no ready-made method available for assessing the handprint of expert work.

We assess the realisation of 12 areas of sustainable development in the project and our role in it with the handprint assessment.

We assess the realisation of 12 areas of sustainable development in the project and our role in it with the handprint index.
The environmental handprint assessment covers 12 areas of sustainable development.

How our environmental handprint assessment works

  • Based on self-assessment – conducted at the beginning and end of the project.
  • Assessed by our project manager or expert – evaluating 12 areas of sustainable development in terms of: 1)  feasibility within the project, 2) final implementation, and 3) our team’s role in promoting sustainability (passive, neutral, active).
  • Handprint index – the size of the handprint is expressed as an index from 0 to 100. The larger the environmental handprint, the fewer negative environmental impacts in the client’s project.
  • Comprehensive calculation – environmental handprint assessment is part of our standard project work in large-scale projects.
  • We aim to grow the index – increasing our average handprint index is a measurable goal in our sustainability program.

The indicator supports expertise, clients, and the entire industry

Making the environmental handprint visible through the indicator helps strengthen our role as a sustainable development partner in client projects and encourages progress across the industry. We learn from each measurement, build a data bank of sustainable construction solutions, and our experts’ knowledge of sustainable built environments grows with every project.
