Kruunuvuorenranta Collection Station, Helsinki

Kruunuvuorenranta Collection Station, Helsinki

The new seaside residential area of Kruunuvuorenranta in Helsinki is equipped with an automatic solid waste collection system, with a collection station building set on a steep cliff. To conceal the building's functions from the street, the facades of the building were constructed without windows. The façade is based on the idea of lichen growing on the cliff. The lichen structure was vectorised into triangular patterns cast in precast concrete. During the project, a three-dimensional method of casting the precast concrete elements was developed.

The Kruunuvuorenranta assembly station won 1st prize in the architectural competition "Concrete Facade Architecture Award 2017". In addition, it was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award in 2018 and for the Finlandia Prize for Architecture in 2019.
