As part of the Helsinki Airport upgrade and extension programme, Terminal 2 was extended to meet the demands of a growing number of passengers.

Users are now benefitting from more straightforward connections between the terminal, train station and a new car park. AINS Group was responsible for the project’s rock engineering and product component design for the timber ceiling contractor. The improved connection between Terminal 2 and the train station required rock excavations in the immediate vicinity of the fully operational train line and airport. AINS Group was responsible for the excavation of 35,000 cubic metres of rock as well as rock structure engineering. Due to the spatial organisation, the excavation of the shaft was carried out top-down, which is exceptional. Following the excavation of the 30-metre shaft, a tunnel was created between the train station and the airport concourse, and a bridge across the continuously operational train line was built. The upgrade and extension of T2 were part of Finavia’s EUR 1 billion-plus development programme for Helsinki Airport. The excavation and construction project started in 2014 and will be completed in 2023.
