Tays M-building, Tampere
The upcoming M‑building at Tays, part of the hospital’s acute care hospital operations, will utilise an extensive energy‑recovery system in which heat captured from cooling processes is efficiently reused.
The new facility will bring together specialised medical services in modern spaces equipped with advanced building services engineering. The choice of technical systems has a significant impact on the overall climate footprint of hospital operations. The design of the M‑building is guided by the Rakennustieto environmental classification system, and during the planning phase several comparisons were made, including the energy efficiency of different heating solutions and cooling‑system valve options. The energy‑recovery system designed for the building makes extensive use of heat extracted from cooled spaces, reducing the need for purchased energy and generating considerable lifecycle cost savings. The new building complex will house the key functions of the acute care hospital, including emergency services, operating theatres, imaging units and intensive care units. Designing spaces and technical systems for hospital operations is highly demanding: precise environmental control and operational reliability are essential. To ensure functionality even in abnormal situations, the building will be equipped with parallel systems that maintain uninterrupted operation. All technical equipment will be fully documented in the maintenance manual, supporting preventive maintenance and long system lifecycles. The new M‑building will enhance the efficiency of hospital operations, improve logistics across the campus and strengthen operational security. As distances between units decrease, the resources needed for internal transport will also be reduced.
