HSY, Blominmäki Wastewater Treatment Plant, Espoo
The Blominmäki wastewater treatment plant in Espoo, which is highly efficient on a European and global scale, will significantly reduce the western part of Helsinki metropolitan area's nitrogen and phosphorus loads to the Gulf of Finland by more than 300 tonnes per year.
The project involved a number of innovative energy production and storage solutions, including electricity and heat produced from the biogas generated at the plant. At Blominmäki, 96% of the phosphorus and 90% of the nitrogen in the wastewater is removed.
