Ipi Kulmakuppila, Helsinki

Ipi Kulmakuppila, Helsinki

Ipi Kulmakuppila is located at the corner of Porthaninkatu and Viides Linja in Kallio. With its unique architecture and atmosphere, it has become many a local’s regular café. The double height space with mezzanine level is spacious and Scandinavian. Concrete floors, oak surfaces and brightness recall the 1960s era building’s original character. The café is also unique in that it employs 12 intellectually disabled adults through the non-profit association Lyhty. The project was carried out in collaboration with interior designer Petra Majantie. The project received an honourable mention in the “Rakentamisen Ruusu” award in 2015. According to the jury the café is an excellent example of a 1960s era apartment building’s commercial space being returned to its original lightness and transparency. The jury also commented that the café is in keeping with the spirit of the era and is beautiful, harmonious and restrained.
