Honkarakenne is developing Finland’s largest ever log hotel on the banks of the Tornionjoki River, just a stone’s throw from the centre of Tornio. AINS Group is involved in the hotel’s design and in supporting the development of tourism throughout the Tornionjoki Valley.

Tornio-Haparanda is rapidly emerging as Lapland’s next major tourism hub. The log hotel being developed by Honkarakenne will meet the growing demand of both international and domestic travellers.

“Tornio lacks a resort that reflects the local style. International travellers increasingly want nature to be an integral part of the accommodation experience, and this is achieved exceptionally well in  Honkarakenne’s project,” says Anni Lamomprom, tourism coordinator at Business Tornio.

In addition to leisure travellers, the project also serves business travellers, who visit Tornio all year round thanks to the city’s strong industrial base. Hotel occupancy rates in the city are already exceptionally high – exceeding 70% throughout the year.

A flexible land use plan prepared by AINS Group enables the profitable further development of the hotel concept to meet the needs of different traveller groups, including luxury, family and business guests. The hotel complex will also include a spa with a traditional smoke sauna and an outdoor pool.

“The further planning will be carried out in collaboration with the future spa operator. Hotel and spa guests will certainly appreciate the site’s unique riverside setting, excellent accessibility and short walking distance to the services of Tornio city centre,” says Jukka Kettunen, architect and director of urban development at AINS Group.

The hotel plot is located on the eastern bank of the Tornionjoki River, next to Hannula Bridge.

150-room log hotel will be a pioneer in sustainable tourism

The Tornio border is the busiest land border in Finland, with 14 million annual crossings. The city’s attractiveness is further strengthened by its twin city, Haparanda. A direct rail link to Sweden, scheduled to open this year, will connect the city to Central Europe and support climate-conscious travel.

The 150-room log hotel complex will be located 200 metres from Tornio railway station and 500 metres from the city centre.

When completed, the hotel will be the largest log-built accommodation complex ever constructed in Finland. The building will utilise Honkarakenne’s MultiStorey concept, which enables impressive and durable hybrid multi-storey construction using non-settling CLT logs.

“The concept offers excellent fire safety and acoustics, combining healthy indoor air with architectural design freedom,” says Tero Pylkkänen, sales director of Honkarakenne’s finnish B2B sales.
